Laura Winn Kane
Laura has always preferred to work from life subjects as opposed to photographs. She finds the particular experience of working from life to be invigorating both in its immediacy and intimacy. The bulk of her current work involves oil paintings and pastels of still-life themes. The subjects depicted are from Laura's collection of decorative and utilitarian items or objects provided by clients. The artist enjoys investigating the relationships between individual objects and their surroundings - sometimes emphasizing the importance of these components equally. Color and pattern play important roles. Often, the items within the picture become like stage performers of a tableau scene. She hopes to inspire viewers to consider simple beauty that surrounds us each day - whether it is on a dining room table or an office desk.
Laura holds a BA in Drawing and Painting from the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, NY and a MFA in Painting from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. She has lived and made art in Centre County since 1995. Laura is also a member of the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania, The Art Association of Harrisburg, Art in Common, and the Susquehanna River Art Center. She has exhibited and won awards for her work both regionally and nationally.
