Michelle Montes
My mother often tells me that I could draw as soon as I could hold a pencil. I don’t exactly recall this, but I do remember drawing often. I mostly drew my horses, as their beauty and lines appealed to me. When I was about nine years old, a family member gave me a couple sets of pastels. He said I would probably enjoy them more than my pencils, and he was right. I find their soft powdery texture, and luscious colors so intoxicating. If they were a drug, I am certainly addicted. Every time I open my boxes of pastels, my heart races – I want to just eat them all up! They are the perfect medium for the way I want to create. My idea of creating is to get in the composition immediately, mold with shape and color, and then get out; leaving the image with spontaneous color bursts, and impressions of the object. I don’t like to over think the idea, as it takes away the romance of the process for me. I enjoy painting landscapes, but I have found myself quite drawn to still life objects. I find the beauty of everyday objects intriguing.
